Artist, Dahlov Ipcar

Classic Rug Collection is proud to announce our new association with Maine artist, author, and illustrator Dahlov Ipcar. In a career spanning more than 60 years, Mrs. Ipcar has written and illustrated more than 30 children’s and young adult books, starting with The Little Fisherman (by Margaret Wise Brown) in 1945 and including The Cat at Night, One Horse Farm, Hardscrabble Harvest, The Calico Jungle and My Wonderful Christmas Tree.

Her unique and distinctively modern style helped change the role of artwork in children’s literature. She introduced children to Cubist influences, folk art and modern design with rich patterns and textures that spring from nature. Mrs. Ipcar’s body of work reflects New England sensibilities; her stories are often about the pleasures of a simple life, appreciation for what the earth provides and the power of the imagination.

Mrs. Ipcar has been named winner of the prestigious 2010 President’s Award from the New England Independent Booksellers Association (NEIBA), an award given annually to recognize outstanding contribution to arts and letters. “Dahlov Ipcar's lifelong body of work is entirely inspiring,” said NEIBA Board President Dick Hermans, who chose Mrs. Ipcar as this year’s recipient. “That she has so beautifully created books to draw children, in particular, to the joys of language and art is a further testament to her genius. Readers of all ages have delighted in Ipcar's work for many years and because her work is so timeless, they will do so for decades to come.”

More recently, Mrs. Ipcar was the recipient of the 2012 Maine In America Award, a recognition granted by the Farnsworth Art Museum's Presidents Council to honor an individual or group who has made an outstanding contribution to Maine's role in American art.

Barbara Barran has worked with Mrs. Ipcar to translate her images to a new medium: hand-sewn chain stitch. Made of wool thread on natural canvas, the pillows and rugs in the collection are completely made by hand in Kashmir.

The initial collection draws on images of dogs and cats from The Cat at Night, Black and White, and The Art of Dahlov Ipcar.  The latest collection draws on images from The Calico Jungle. Many of the artist’s books are available for purchase at
